About

The Kılıçkaya Barrage, located on the Kelkit River within the boundaries of the Suşehri district of Sivas, is a structure of great importance both for energy production and for the region’s ecosystem.

Built between 1980 and 1990, the barrage is one of Turkey’s major hydroelectric power plants (HES).

The vast reservoir it creates also helps moderate the region’s climate.

The area surrounding the reservoir is a popular spot for nature walks and picnics, especially during the summer months. The combination of the lake’s blue waters and the surrounding green vegetation offers a stunning view.

Species such as mirror carp and catfish thrive in the lake. This has revitalized both commercial and recreational fishing in the region.

From time to time, the area hosts water sports activities, such as canoe and boat tours, as part of local events and festivals.
