Lake Gölova

Lake Gölova (commonly known as the Gölova Reservoir), located within the boundaries of Gölova—the easternmost district of Sivas—is a wetland that stands out for both its ecological diversity and its peaceful atmosphere.

Lake Gölova and its surroundings have been designated an “Internationally Important Nature Area (IBA)” due to their rich biological diversity.

The lake serves as a stopover or breeding ground for many migratory birds, including the pintail duck (an endangered species), the common snipe, the wild goose, the crane, the pelican, and the heron.

It is home to rare plant species, such as Verbascum trichostylum, a type of mullein endemic to the region.

Fish species such as mirror carp, mullet, silver carp, and crucian carp inhabit the lake. It is a popular spot for recreational anglers, especially on weekends. Local fishing competitions are also held from time to time.

Activities such as camping, nature walks, photo safaris, and cycling are widely enjoyed around the lake.

Afforestation efforts have been carried out around the dam, and the area is used as a picnic and recreation spot, particularly by local residents and expatriates.
