About

Located on the Sivas-Erzincan highway, approximately 5 km from the Hafik district center, the key details about this lake are as follows:

1. Geological Structure and Formation

Karst (Gypsum Karst) Lake: Lake Lota was formed by the accumulation of water within a sinkhole created by the dissolution of gypsum (plaster of Paris) in the region. This feature gives it a similar origin to other lakes in and around Sivas (such as Lake Hafik and Lake Tödürge).

Depth and Water Composition: Due to its karstic structure, the lake’s bottom features deep fissures and sinkholes; consequently, it is quite deep in places. The water is fresh to slightly brackish and is fed by spring waters rising from the bottom.

2. Wildlife and Environment

The lake and its surroundings serve as an important stopover and breeding ground, particularly for migratory birds.

Since it is home to various species of freshwater fish (especially carp), it is a popular spot for recreational anglers. The surrounding area is also valued by locals as a picnic and recreation area due to its tranquil atmosphere and natural scenery.
