Şems-i Sivasî, whose real name was Şemseddin Ahmed, was one of the prominent religious scholars, Sufis, and poets of the 16th century. His father was Seyyid Mehmed Ebü’l-Berekât, and his grandfather was Ârif Hasan. It is said that his lineage originated from the Khorasan region. Born in Sivas, Şems-i Sivasî turned to religious studies from a young age and received Sufi training.
When he turned seven, he traveled to Amasya with his father, where he visited Muslihiddin, his father’s spiritual mentor. He quickly earned his sheikh’s favor; later, he became a disciple of Abdülmecid Şirvânî in Tokat and continued his training on the Sufi path. Upon his sheikh’s instruction, he came to Sivas, where he engaged in spiritual guidance, teaching, and spiritual gatherings.
Şems-i Sivasî is regarded as the founder of the Şemsiyye branch of the Halvetiyye order. He authored numerous works in both verse and prose and played a significant role in the spread of religious and Sufi thought in Sivas. At the same time, he left a profound spiritual impact on the people through his sermons, spiritual gatherings, and guidance.
Şems-i Sivasî, whose name was mentioned not only in the fields of scholarship and Sufism but also in the military and social life of the era, is said to have participated in Sultan Mehmed III’s Campaign to Egri. Şems-i Sivasî, who passed away some time after returning from the campaign, is buried in a mausoleum that is now visited as one of Sivas’s major religious tourism sites. The mausoleum holds an important place in the city’s culture, both for its historical significance and its spiritual atmosphere.
