About

This craft, which has developed in parallel with Sivas knife-making in particular, is currently being kept alive by a small number of master craftsmen.

The most distinctive feature of Sivas combs is that they are made entirely from natural materials. Buffalo, ox, or ram horns are typically used. Horns are chosen because they are composed of keratin and are compatible with the keratin found in human hair.

The horns are first cleaned, then heated over a fire to soften them, and finally flattened in a vise. The flattened plates are shaped into combs. The teeth are cut one by one using a “hair saw.” This stage requires great skill and patience.

Benefits of Bone Combs

Unlike plastic combs, bone combs offer many health benefits. They do not cause static electricity in the hair, thereby preventing frizz and breakage. The keratin in the horn’s structure ensures that the natural oils (sebum) on the scalp are evenly distributed throughout the hair strands. The natural structure of the teeth stimulates blood circulation in the scalp. Since they are completely natural, they have a very low risk of harboring bacteria.

The artisans in Sivas who carry on this craft typically work in workshops at the Şifaiye Madrasa or in the historic bazaars. In addition to traditional combs, they also produce decorative items, hair clips, and souvenirs today.
